Living in the American prairie, several hours drive from a major metropolitan area, means that catching Bollywood on the big screen is a special occasion.

It’s so entertaining and enlightening to see an Indian film in the cinema with an audience that I tend to drop everything when a new release is announced, no matter what the movie is.

As summer ticked by with no sign of films like “Delhi Belly,” “Singham,” “Bodyguard” and “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan,” I began to lose hope that I’d get to see “Ra.One.” It was a real thrill, then, to see an email from our local distributor with the subject line “‘Ra.One’ Grand Release on Diwali.” I always get goosebumps when a distributor announces a movie I actually want to see, especially when that movie is one of the year’s most anticipated releases.

A local showing means I’ll understand what everyone is talking about and get to participate in the global conversation about the film before all the excitement fades away.

In most cases, my Bollywood cinema-going experiences in the U.S. are a bit tamer than the descriptions I have heard of movie theater experiences in different parts of India. In my local cinema, an art house in Champaign, Illinois, the predominantly South Asian-origin audience seems to operate in an ever-shifting cultural mix of filmi exuberance and Midwestern American public reserve: it’s perfectly acceptable to discuss the film at full voice as it plays, but only once have I seen anyone leap out of their seat to dance during a song. Big laughs often obscure the next few lines of dialogue, but cheers and howls of appreciation generally erupt only for the biggest stars portrayed in the most spectacular ways.

Audience reactions can say so much about whether a film’s content and techniques are working. Emotions and humor can be lost or mangled in translation even with the most carefully created subtitles, but they are reflected and restored in the responses of the people around me. This phenomenon happens in reverse, too: The filmmakers may have put all they had into a joke or romantic scene, but the snorts and cackles of my neighbors tell me when the efforts fall flat. No words are necessary to perceive the difference between “laughing with” and “laughing at.”

The most excitable audiences I’ve been a part of were for films that fall under the “mass entertainer” category. At the Tamil blockbuster “Endhiran” (2010), the audience screamed so loudly during superstar Rajnikanth’s credit in the titles that the film was inaudible for half a minute. At a screening of the Telugu film “Dookudu” in September, I was delighted to spot a group of young men in the front rows flinging handfuls of self-made confetti into the air at the first few appearances of hero Mahesh Babu (a ritual that friends in Australia tell me accompanies many Telugu heroes in their theaters). During the item song “Character Dheela” in Salman Khan-starrer “Ready” (2011), the wolf-whistles for Zarine Khan almost drowned out the music and were 10 times more passionate than anything uttered for the film’s actual heroine, Asin.

My Friday night show of “Ra.One” in east-central Illinois got off to a happy start. The lobby of the small theater, the usual venue for Indian films in town, was jammed with chattering couples, friends and families. Once the film was underway, however, it seemed from my vantage point near the back of the full house that the audience was not demonstrably impressed. In fact, the loudest, most excited reaction was for someone who wasn’t even a part of the film – it was the cameo appearance of Rajnikanth as his robot character from “Endhiran.”

One could argue that this reaction parallels the film itself: Kareena Kapoor’s character seemed more awed by Rajni-bot than she did by the hero of the story she was in. The star of this film elicited a few whistles at the first appearance of superheroic G.One (Shahrukh Khan), who bursts into the scene to save the primary target of villain Ra.One’s wrath. But the audience had a lot more fun earlier in the film when the first version of SRK appeared, a deliberately ridiculous silken-haired hero in black leather who alternates dishoom-dishoom and canoodling with the damsel in distress while nodding to the actor’s own previous films.

Across its two-and-a-half-hour run time, the responses to “Ra.One” were much smaller, much milder than hoped. If people were impressed by the technology and effects, as I was, they kept that praise to themselves. Our collective reaction was fairly stoic, which is not a description I anticipated would apply in this setting. There were no screams or cheers, no applause or dancing or even boisterous wisecracks to the characters on the screen. What I learned from this audience—admittedly a very particular demographic slice of the film’s global audience—is that “Ra.One” simply failed to excite.

New Delhi: Ra.One is certainly not the favourite of the critics, but Shah Rukh Khan, the super hero, seems to be working at the box office.

Shah Rukh Khan's Rs 150-crore magnum opus Ra.One has smashed box-office records with never-before opening weekend collections.

The film, which released worldwide on Diwali, collected Rs 96 crore net in its five-day festive opening weekend at roughly 3,100 screens across India.

Critics may have lashed out against the film's sloppy script, but it didn't stop Ra.One from breaking the record for highest collections in a single day, making an unprecedented Rs 23.5 crores last Thursday alone.

However, it must be noted that Ra.One’s collections reflect revenues from Tamil and Telugu versions of the film in addition to the Hindi version, steep numbers are also thanks to higher ticket prices for the 3D version.

Ending weeks of nail-biting tension over whether Ra.One could beat Bodyguard records, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer registered considerably bigger opening-weekend numbers than Salman Khan's last hit.

Bodyguard, which enjoyed a similar five-day festive opening weekend when it released on Eid in August, was produced on a budget of roughly Rs 85 crore rupees, and arrived on approximately 2700 screens in India.

While Ra.One collected as much as Rs 32.75 crore, Bodyguard was able to collect Rs 27 crore in their respective five-day weekends abroad.

Ra.One may have beaten Bodyguard in the battle for the opening weekend, but question is – will the film's winning streak continue? Will it beat the Rs 300-crore plus worldwide collections of 3 Idiots? That's the true test. That's the big record to break. Answer's out soon.

Record collections worldwide

Since its release, Ra.One has been creating history by shattering regional, national and international box office record after record with the biggest Diwali day opening followed by the biggest single day collections for an Indian film and now the biggest ever weekend release for both India and overseas box office.

Commenting on the opening, Nandu Ahuja, Sr VP, Distribution, Eros International Media Ltd said, "Ra. One released to packed houses across the country on Diwali day and has already created history by taking over the mantle of the biggest domestic earner so far. The film continues to be on its record breaking spree with several new achievements since its release. It has touched the highest individual collection in circuits such as Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan. We see repeat viewings of the movie with the 3-D version being equally sought after. With the Eid holiday also coming up next week and no other major film release; we are anticipating the film to continue doing huge numbers".

The international exposure of Ra.One will continue to grow in the coming months as Eros International continues to take the film to more and more countries. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in the first quarter of 2012 across several territories including South Korea, Hong Kong , Taiwan , Russia , Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Palestine , Brazil , Spain, Italy and Greece .

Ra.One is Shah Rukh Khan's most ambitious project to date directed by Anubhav Sinha starring King Khan himself as G.One along with Arjun Rampal as Ra.One and Kareena Kapoor. The film's visual effects and state of the art production techniques have set a new standard in Indian film. All this, combined with a widely acclaimed soundtrack produced by Vishal & Shekhar and featuring Grammy award nominee Akon, have made Ra.One a must see film.

For Eros, the success of Ra.One is part of its ongoing slate of film releases. In the current financial year it expects to release over 70 Indian films with high profile releases to date including Ready, Murder 2, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Mausam. The line-up for the remainder of the financial year continues to look very attractive with three major releases still to come – Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar, Rohit Dhawan's Desi Boyz and Shriram Raghavan’s Agent Vinod.

Amitabh Bachchan taunts media

The Shiv Sena chief also says that Shahrukh Khan is a Pakistani supporter, in his latest Saamna editorial. Tsk tsk tsk…

What’s with Shahrukh Khan and Bal Thackeray? Just when you thought their fight was old news, they drag it out again. Or rather, the Shiv Sena chief has done so. Thackeray has stated in his latest Saamna editorial that RA.One is a flop and the makers are lying about its huge collections. He also reportedly sarcastically said that Shahrukh is a self-proclaimed Nishan-e-Pakistan (the highest civilian honour bestowed in Pakistan). Come on – SRK and Pakistani? Get real! Thackeray founded his rant on the fake Twitter profile of Amitabh Bachchan, which has been running down RA.One. The politician claimed in his editorial that it was an attempt to ruin the senior Bachchan’s image. Anyway, this is not the first time the superstar and the politico have butted heads. Shahrukh had, before the release of his film My Name Is Khan, got into a controversy over his comments that Pakistani cricketers should be allowed to play in the Indian Premier League. Thackeray had made it very clear that he opposed Shahrukh’s stand. Since MNIK was slated to release, and the Shiv Sainiks were starting to make trouble for theatreowners, Shahrukh had to back down and claim that he did not mean to hurt anyone’s sentiments. We wonder if SRK will react to this latest attack and fuel the controversy, or simply let it go and enjoy a quiet birthday instead

Amitabh Bachchan taunts media

Amitabh Bachchan taunts media

Amitabh Bachchan taunts media

Oh, not again! We have a new incidence of discord between Bollywood and the media! After Shahrukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Ram Gopal Varma, now, it is Amitabh Bachchan who has decided to taunt the media.

With the F1 grabbing all the headlines yesterday, seems like Amitabh Bachchan must have switched on a news channel and come across some news about the mega racing event.

Amitabh Bachchan wrote on twitter: “A media head acknowledges the F1 phenomena, and in same breathe talks of its irrelevance in todays India in its poverty ..”

He added: “They ask if all this expense is necessary in our country, and its wealth diversion to the poor.. good thinking media head.. but ..... but ... how about shutting down your 5-star media studio too .. save money for the poor .. !!”

Lately, there have been quite a few instances of tiffs between Bollywood and the media; and we seriously hope this was the last one!

Anyhow, let us conclude by quoting Mr. Bachchan’s statement itself: “Put something down on social networking site and be sure it shall make headlines within minutes - the power and glory of the net

Ra.One Impresses Hollywood

Though the reviews for Ra.One in India have been fairly divided in terms of appreciation of the film, overseas it’s another story. Seems as if counterparts in the West are enjoying Ra.One quite a bit.

From New York Times to the Hollywood Reporter, reviews have been coming in and the film has received a resounding thumbs up. “Anubhav Sinha’s exhilarating fantasy “Ra.One” is Bollywood at its best. It has energy, spectacle and humor, song and dance, but razzle-dazzle special effects and action stunts never overwhelm its story of enduring love that unfolds amid an intricate and inspired sci-fi odyssey.” says Kevin Thomas, a top critic from the Los Angeles Times.

Even the ever-so-popular standard for quality movies, Rotten Tomatoes, seems to have earned a higher rating for Ra.One than in India. The film has a total critics’ rating of 78%, which is most definitely Fresh. And when you factor in only the Top Critics in the ratings it is raised even further to an 83% freshness! This is much higher than current Hollywood box office darlings such as Real Steel, Paranormal Activity 3 and Footloose.

Ra.One was also screened at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, where SRK addressed the audience before the film was shown. Academy Award winning Sound Mixer Resul Pookutty tweeted that they received an “overwhelming response from the fraternity here”.

It seems that the western world has really taken a shining to Shahrukh Khan’s superhero magnum opus Ra.One. In the words of Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood Reporter “RA.ONE nicely serves two masters — good family values and good capitalist instincts.” And that seems to suit our overseas neighbours just fine

Movie Review: Ra.One

Bollywood, the name evokes singing and dancing, large choreographed pieces, love and romance but never any actual kissing. Now let's add science fiction to that list with special effects galore and 3D and a mention that this movie now holds the record for the most expensive Bollywood film ever made. There are a lot of good points to this cinematic endeavour and there are a number of not so good points which explains why the critics have been giving mixed reviews.

Let's start with a not so good point. Anubhav Sinha who both wrote the story and directed the movie must have had a target audience of kids in mind. The whole idea centers on a computer game and the characters in the game crossing over into real life. Sorry, this is where I roll my eyes. Tron Legacy tried to thrill me with its computer generated world but the story was so juvenile, it just didn't capture my imagination like, for instance, The Matrix. Ra.One has the same problem. Maybe if I was a fourteen year old kid I may have been enthralled with this gaming stuff translated in live characters. Unfortunately, I'm not 14 years old. Some may say I'm just being an old fuddy duddy but you have to have a little more meat to your story than what Mr. Sinha has come up with. Then again, I wasn't too thrilled with Transformers but I can see those who went nuts for that movie would find this story captivating.

Shahrukh Khan is quite versatile and this film affords him an opportunity to show all his talents. I can see why he has been given the much deserved moniker of The King of Bollywood. While he does a great job of playing the handsome hero kicking butt, he is very, very amusing playing the more goofy game developer. He is so goofy; I found it hard to believe his wife turns out to be the beautiful Kareena Kapoor. However, at a party when the Akon song Criminal starts playing, Mr. Goofy turns into a surprisingly charming dancer. That's when I realised why Kareena Kapoor would have fallen for him.

Speaking of Akon, later in the film we have the choreographed scene with the Akon song Chammak Challo. These big dance numbers are the hallmark of Bollywood films and this film doesn't disappoint in that regard even though it is technically a science fiction movie. I've included the videos for Criminal and Chammak Challo below as I greatly enjoyed them.

I went expecting the film to be in Hindi with subtitles. I was surprised at how much of it was in English. What? I'm still wondering if English crops up that much in everyday speech or if the film maker added the English with an eye on an international market. A couple of scenes where somebody was talking about computer technology and threw in the occasional English technical term was anticipated but then somebody would throw in an entire English expression or just switch to English altogether. What? I'm confused

Shahrukh Khan promotes ‘RA.One’ at Formula One

Rubbing shoulders with the Force India team, promoting his superhero flick RA.One, and partying hard – the King did it all at the recent F1 race held in Noida

Shahrukh Khan has always been very vocal about his love for sport. Be it cricket or Formula One, the actor makes it a point to spread his infectious energy everywhere. Being the brand ambassador for the Sahara Force India team, SRK made sure he promoted his film that along with cheering for the racers. Posing with the RA.One film poster emblazoned on the F1 car, SRK seemed to be on an all-time high with his movie doing well. Although his plans of having his movie’s name on Michael Schumacher’s car went down the drain, the actor seemed satisfied with this option as well. He was spotted hobnobbing with Force India’s Vijay Mallya and Subroto Roy. SRK also socialised with the race drivers. Although the team never quite hit the mark, the after party turned out to be a huge affair with celebs thronging at Arjun Rampal’s newly launched night club, effectively titled ‘Lap’. Even Gulshan Grover was seen posing for the shutterbugs on the final day of the match. Amidst the promotions game that King Khan was busy playing, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was getting all geared up to wave the Grand Prix flag. Putting an end to the F1 hullabaloo, all the excitement came to an end as the winner, Sebastian Vettel, crossed the finishing line. All-in-all, it was a great event, wherein B-town celebs added the much required glamour and spice to the sport.

Shah Rukh Khan inspires Kristen Stewart!

Shahrukh Khan goes gaga over Lady Gaga!

The little fan in Shahrukh Khan came out as he described the international pop star, Lady Gaga as ‘very sweet’. The singer is in India for the Indian Grand Prix

Lady Gaga, who is in India on her maiden visit, exhibits her caring, down to earth nature underneath all the glitzy exterior. The pop star showers her love on the country and its tradition as she makes her presence felt at the F1 race, spends quality time with HIV affected children with minimal fuss and camera craze.Shahrukh Khan who interacted with the star during the F1 race is spellbound by Lady Gaga. The actor became a fan of the singer all thanks to his daughter, Suhana. ”My daughter is a big fan of Lady Gaga. She listens to her music and introduced me to her music, and I am also a fan of her now,” Shahrukh told reporters at the red carpet of the F1 after-party late Sunday night. “It (the interaction) was very nice. She (Gaga) was very sweet. I sat with her for a couple of hours and exchanged a lot of good things about life. She is very deep, very sweet,” he said. SRK apparently wanted to collaborate with Gaga for a song for his latest release RA.One. But the plan couldn’t materialise due to time constraints. However, he caught up with the Poker Face singer for a chat for on a youth channel. Shahrukh came in straight from Toronto to watch the first F1 race in India on Sunday and loved the experience. “It was very noisy, very energetic, highly energising and very well-organised,” he said, adding that he is proud of the event. “It’s a big occasion. It’s quite marvellous. I think we should all celebrate the fact that we had such a big event here,” he added.

Tom Cruise is following Shah Rukh Khan?

Tom Cruise
Times of India

It was big news that Hollywood actor Tom Cruise was following Indian actor Shahid Kapoor on Twitter. A little investigation revealed that Shahid was not the only Indian actor the "Mission Impossible" star is 'friends' with on the microblogging website.

He is also tracking the online activities of Shah Rukh Khan, Gul Panag and some members of the media. However, this account is not the actor's personal one. A fan club called TomCruise.com runs this account. The page has no authentication confirming that Cruise doesn't have any direct involvement in any activity related to interacting with the fans and fellow actors.

The description of the account says, "Official TomCruise.com team tweets. Does Tom tweet? Sometimes between family & filming and it's clear when he does! We love you guys! (sic)"

Unlike Ashton Kutcher or Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom isn't someone who has a major web presence or influence. In fact, a few years ago, in an interview, he had once said that the internet and its growing clout scares him

Why The Khans Can

Three Khans-Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman

They have ruled Bollywood for over two decades. What makes the Three Khans — Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman — the stars they are? How do some of their earliest directors remember them? And what makes us line up, Friday after Friday, to give them another chance?

Even the sharpest crystal-ball gazer would have baulked at predicting how these guys would turn out, given how they started out. One with a jitter-buggy stutter and the kind of moptop no girl should have taken seriously. Another who had to compete with cooing pigeons and a simpering sweetie for audience affection. And the third who danced on a table in the name of his papa, and sacrificed his life for his love.

A Bollywood quiz with these clues would be the easiest sweepstake in the world: Shah Rukh Khan. Salman Khan. Aamir Khan. Deewana. Maine Pyar Kiya. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

Selling Ra.One

As the biggest Indian film ever readies for a Diwali release, Shah Rukh Khan’s marketing strategy may prove to be the cracker

If you thought Aamir Khan was a marketing genius, then Shah Rukh Khan, with his latest marketing blitzkrieg, for Ra.One, seems to have overshadowed the former’s efforts. The promotional activity that started on a small-scale seven months ago has hit an all-time high now. Shah Rukh, who is popping out of every hoarding and advertisement across the country, has also toured 10 cities in India, interacted with his fans, danced with them, distributed Ra.One figurines and mesmerised them with his wit and charm.

In the last one month, he has appeared on three reality show finales — India’s Got Talent, Just Dance and Sa Re Ga Ma Li’l Champs. A couple of days ago, he was on the hot seat of Kaun Banega Crorepati with Amitabh Bachchan. He launched the Ra.One game on Sony PlayStation and social games on Indiatimes to attract children. If this is not enough, the G.One online store is selling merchandise related to the film. Products include pencil box, piggy banks, lunch box, notebooks, limited edition toys and sippers. The actor will be hosting three premieres for his film in Dubai, London and Toronto on October 24, 25 and 26 respectively.

Bollywood’s Shah Rukh the one to beat this Diwali

MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan’s science fiction superhero film “Ra.One” looks set to be the only blockbuster this Diwali as Bollywood gears up for the annual festive period.

Like Christmas in the West, the holiday season around the Hindu festival of lights on October 26 is traditionally a bumper time for the Hindi-language film industry, with a slew of big name, big budget movies vying for top spot.

But while major productions have gone head-to-head in previous years, this year there are few, if any, challengers to Khan’s special effects-packed movie, which has cost more than $20 million to make – one of Bollywood’s most expensive films ever.

Some analysts predicted that the film, which sees Khan play “G.One”, who saves humanity from evil villain Ra.One, would break box office records.

“’Ra.One’ will get a record opening,” said trade analyst Komal Nahta on the entertainment web site koimoi.com. “You will not get tickets. People will go mad when this film releases.”

Bollywood fans could be forgiven for thinking that “Ra.One” was already in cinemas, with Khan rarely out of the media and aggressively promoting the movie with a series of marketing tie-ups and promotions in recent months.

The film made headlines for the wrong reasons on Friday, however, when a court ordered Khan and his production company to deposit $200,000 after a scriptwriter claimed that the movie had breached his copyright.

Two judges at the Bombay High Court said there appeared to be a prima facie infringement of intellectual property and told Khan to pay in 10 million rupees to the court or risk seeing the release of “Ra.One” postponed.

The buzz around the film has eclipsed a slew of pre-Diwali releases coming on the back of a successful period from August to October, which produced a string of hit films.

Two other films are due out on October 27, “Tell Me O Kkhuda” (Tell Me O God), starring 1970s star Hema Malini’s daughter Esha Deol and veteran actor Dharmendra, and “Damadamm” with singer-turned-actor Himesh Reshammiya.

But both are low budget and low profile in comparison.

Khan has become an established Diwali favourite with the festival providing him with the biggest hits of his career, notably “Diwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge” (The Braveheart Gets The Bride) in 1995 and “Om Shanti Om” in 2007.

His first Diwali release since then, “Ra.One” is easily Khan’s most ambitious film to date, raising the stakes for the 45-year-old actor and his Red Chillies Entertainment production company.

Mayank Shekhar, national cultural editor at the Hindustan Times newspaper, said the huge costs could largely be recovered through marketing and promotion deals.

Television rights have already been sold for 350 million rupees, he said.

But he added that the film would need a long run in cinemas to make substantial returns at the box office, rather than relying on the first weekend receipts that are the usual benchmark for film-makers in India.

Shekhar said success was important for Khan himself.

“He hasn’t been around for a while. He was last seen in ‘My Name Is Khan’, which was a while ago, which hasn’t been the case for his so-called rivals,” he told AFP.

“Salman (Khan) has delivered three back-to-back hits and Aamir (Khan) has also had three commercial successes.” The three Khans are not related.

Shekhar added: “Eid is Salman’s weekend, Diwali is usually Shah Rukh’s and Aamir has Christmas. That’s pretty much how they’ve had their releases.

“But Shah Rukh hasn’t had one (a release) for a couple of years, which is why he’s desperate to make up for all the lost time.”

Will Shahrukh Khan’s Ra.One break Salman Khan’s box office record?

This Eid, Salman Khan created an opening day box office record with Bodyguard taking in Rs 21 crores. Now, Shahrukh Khan might just beat the record on 26th of October, Diwali day, with Ra.One.

The SRK marketing machine has been working on all cylinders, with Shahrukh crisscrossing across all of India, announcing tie-ups by day and night, seriously is there anything that SRK does not endorse or Ra.One does not have a tie-up with.

But all things considered, breaking Salman Khan’s box office record will take something special, and surely Shahrukh Khan has packed in all the masala to make for a dhamakadar Diwali at the box office.

Songs by International pop-stars, world class special effects, SRK as super-hero G.One, chammak challo Kareena Kapoor, heart-throb Arjun Rampal as super-villain Ra.One, recently added action-packed cameos by Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra and even a last minute addition to the movie - a cameo by superstar Rajinikanth. Shahrukh surely has left no stone unturned to ensure success to his dream project.

To add to that, Ra.One has been dubbed in Tamil and Telegu, and will also have a simultaneous release in 3D, with tickets for the 3D version costing much more! All things considered, it does seem that Shahrukh Khan has the right mix to shatter the box office record.

Ra.One will be releasing on Diwali day, we will know where it ends up soon enough.

Shah Rukh Khan’s got a new office – and it’s an entire building!

Shah Rukh Khan's bungalow, Mannat, on Bandstand in Bandra, Mumbai, is a landmark in the city. Whenever you pass his heritage bungalow, you will see hordes of people trying to catch a glimpse of the actor, which is next to impossible, given its high walls.

If that isn't enough, SRK's new office space for his company Red Chillies Entertainment, on 15th Cross Road in Khar, is a traffic-stopper, with him rising out of the walls of the building in his G.One superhero avatar from his upcoming film, Ra.One. Interestingly, the film is titled Ra.One, the antagonist, played by Arjun Rampal; SRK plays G.One, the superhero. You cannot help but notice the entire building space comprising 40,000 square feet, covered in the film's posters on the relatively quiet Ram Krishna Mission Marg area.

A tad narcissistic, but then SRK is not known to do anything in small measures. With SRK, just an office is not enough – an entire building is what he needs! He had purchased the land in 2008 and construction work has been going on in full-swing since. Finally, his dream office has taken shape. The plot of land was popularly known as Watch Tower in the area as it housed a ground and a two-storey prayer hall with a watchtower earlier. SRK is set to move into his swank, new office around Diwali when it will be ready to welcome the King and his court.
