Aamir, Shahrukh, Salman wary of commenting on Lokpal

After seeing the consequences of their comments on politically sensitive issues, Bollywood actors seem to have caved in. At a time when the nation is engulfed in the so called ‘second freedom struggle’ and all other art fraternities are vociferously declaring their support for Anna Hazare’s non violent anti corruption campaign against the Congress led UPA government, Bollywood celebrities seem conspicuous by their inaction. Even the three Khans of the industry - Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan – who usually have an opinion on anything and everything under the sun, are wary of commenting on the highly debated issue of the Lokpal Bill.

In the past, all the three have tasted the consequences of practicing their fundamental right of freedom of expression. When Aamir declared his support for the campaign demanding rehabilitation and resettlement for those who were displaced because of the Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat, the ruling government banned his film ‘Fanaa’ from releasing in the state. On the other hand when Shahrukh commented on the absence of Pakistani players from IPL, communal parties like Shiv Sena took protest march to his Bandra residence and asked him to ‘go and live in Pakistan’. Salman also came under fire from right wing parties for his comments on the 26/11 carnage in Mumbai.
We really hope people and especially political parties understand that even film actors are citizens of this country and have a right to comment and express their views on every issue of social importance.
